The term Janu Basti originates from “Janu,” which refers to the knee joint, and “Basti,” which means to hold. Janu Basti treatment involves the application of herbal medicated oils for a specific duration to a particular part of the knee joint. The knee joint is essential for daily activities, and maintaining its health is crucial. Various factors, such as inflammation, degeneration, and injury, can contribute to knee pain and stiffness.
Occupations that require prolonged standing or walking long distances subject the knee joints to constant repetitive stress. This can lead to stiffness, swelling, clicking sounds, and limited movement.
Treatment Method:
The patient is positioned comfortably with both legs extended. A mold or dam, made from kneaded black gram dough, is placed on one or both knees. Medicated oil at a suitable temperature is then poured inside the prepared wall and left in place for approximately 30-40 minutes. The oil’s heat is maintained throughout the procedure. Upon completion, the dough is removed, and a gentle massage is administered, usually followed by hot steam fomentation therapy to enhance the effect of Janu Basti. This helps the oil penetrate deeply into the muscle tissues, softening stiff ligaments, muscles, and tendons to promote the repair of damaged tissue and facilitate movement of the knee joint.
